Independent Publisher Book Award for Fiction
The Independent Publisher Book Awards were established in 1996 to bring increased recognition to the deserving but often unsung titles published by independent authors and publishers.

Man Booker Prize
The Man Booker Prize is awarded for the best full-length novel written in English by a citizen of the Commonwealth or the Republic of Ireland. The Man Booker Prize is sponsored by Booker PLC.

National Book Award for Fiction

National Book Critics Circle Award
Every year, the National Book Critics Circle of over 700 book reviewers from all parts of the country present awards for the finest books published in English. Categories include: Fiction, General Nonfiction, Biography/Autobiography, Poetry, and Criticism.

Nobel Prize for Literature
Based on the recipient's entire body of published work, the Nobel Prize for Literature is awarded "to the person who shall have produced in the field of literature the most outstanding work of an idealistic tendency."

Oregon Book Award
The Oregon Book Awards are presented annually by Literary Arts, Inc. for the finest accomplishments by Oregon writers.

Orange Prize for Fiction
The Orange Prize for fiction was created in 1995 in response to a growing awareness that often the considerable achievements of women novelists were frequently being passed over by the major literary prizes. The Orange Prize is judged exclusively by women, who choose the year's best novel in English written by a women.

PEN/Faulkner Award
The PEN/Faulkner Award was founded by writers in 1980 to honor their peers and is now the largest juried award for fiction in the United States. The award was named for William Faulkner, who used his Nobel Prize funds to create an award for young writers, and is affiliated with PEN (Poets, Playwrights, Editors, Essayists and Novelists), the international writers' organization.

PEN/Nabokov Award
The PEN/Nabokov Award is given to a living author whose body of work, either written in or translated into English, is of enduring originality and consummate craftsmanship.

PEN/Robert Bingham Fellowship for Writers
The PEN/Robert Bingham Fellowship for Writers honors an exceptionally talented fiction writer whose debut work — a novel or collection of short stories — represents distinguished literary achievement and suggests great promise.

PEN/Malamud Award
The PEN/Malamud Award and Memorial Reading was established by the family of the late Bernard Malamud to honor excellence in the art of the short story.

Pulitzer Prize for Fiction
The Pulitzer Prize has been awarded by Columbia University each spring since 1917. The awards are chosen by a board of jurors for Journalism, Letters, Music and Drama. The awards for Letters include Nonfiction, Poetry, Biography or Autobiography, History, and Fiction, which is listed here.

Costa Book of the Year
The Costa awards are given annually in five categories: Poetry, Biography, First Novel, Novel, and Children's Literature to authors who exemplify the best of contemporary British writing and who have lived in Great Britain or Ireland for at least three years. Out of these four winners, one book is chosen as the Costa Book of the Year.

The American Horticultural Society Book Award
Each year the American Horticultural Society (AHS) honors great gardening literature through the AHS Book Award Program.

James Beard Cookbook of the Year
The James Beard Foundation Awards recognize culinary professionals for excellence and achievement in their field. The Awards are presented by the James Beard Foundation, a not-for-profit charitable organization dedicated to furthering the appreciation and practice of fine food and beverage.

IACP Cookbook of the Year
The IACP (International Association of Culinary Professionals) Cookbook Awards annually celebrate the year's most outstanding food and beverage publications. The awards program was created to encourage and promote quality and creativity in cookbook writing and publishing and to expand awareness of culinary literature.

Children's Books
Caldecott Medal
The Caldecott Medal is awarded each year to the illustrator of the most distinguished American picture book for children by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association.

Newbery Medal
The Newbery Medal is awarded to the year's most distinguished contribution to American literature for children. The medal is presented by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association.

Coretta Scott King Award
Though not recognized as an association award by the ALA until 1982, the Coretta Scott King Award had its inception in the late sixties. The award, commemorating Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and honoring his widow, Coretta Scott King, honors African American writers and illustrators and celebrates the African American experience through artistic expression. It is presented annually by the Coretta Scott King Task Force of the American Library Association's Social Responsibilities Round Table.

Young Reader's Choice Award
The YRCA was established in 1940 to promote reading for enjoyment. Children and young adults of Alberta, Alaska, British Columbia, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington select the winners from nominees submitted by librarians, teachers, students and others. Books must be published within the previous 3 years to be eligible.

Mystery
Edgar Award
The Edgar Award, in honor of Edgar Allan Poe, is given by The Mystery Writers of America to the best in mystery fiction and nonfiction produced the previous year. Listed here are the winners in the Fiction category. The first Edgar was awarded in 1954.

Gold Dagger
The Crime Writers' Association Dagger Awards are Britain's most important crime fiction awards. The Gold Dagger is awarded to the year's best crime novel.

Sci-Fi/Fantasy
Hugo Award

Kiriyama Pacific Rim Book Prize
The Kiriyama Pacific Rim Book Prize has been awarded every year since 1996. It promotes books that will contribute to greater understanding and cooperation among the peoples and nations of the Pacific Rim. The Prize is worth US$30,000. Half of the cash award is given to the author of the winning fiction title, and half is given to the author of the winning nonfiction title.
